3. Would it be possible to read this essay as a serious proposal?

  1. I really do not think you could read this essay as a serious proposal. I can not believe what type of person would believe that an idea like this was alright and workable. The mental images that came to mind when I was reading this was obsurd to say the least and sick. So no I do not think anyone would take this seriously.

  2. I think it would be difficult to think of this in a serious manner as a proposal. This is because a lot of the things presented in the proposal were awful and should not be happening in any proposal. His thoughts of what should happen with children were crazy and sickening.

  3. Swift's "modest" proposal is anything but. Nothing can be taken seriously but Swift is using dramatic lengths to make his point because the current problems were big (famine, economic turmoil, political problems) and the masses weren't doing anything to take a stand during this time.

  4. I don't think it would be possible to take this seriously. The ideas that he were proposing were very sick and twisted and would have been impossible to believe.

  5. I would really hope that know one ever thought of it as such. It was hard enough to read with the very thought, let alone anyone truly thinking, "What a great idea, lets eat some babies." It's main purpose was to get people's attention, I think he got it.

  6. I don't think that a person could take this serious, but then again, if that wasn't a fear, then what was the purpose of the closing line paragraph?
