Lear #10

Discuss the symbolism of EYES in relationship to Gloucester.

  1. Gloucester is blind by the truth and so is King Lear. The symbol of eyes is what ultimately brings the characters to realization of their mistakes. Both men are blind to their children and the truth about their children. Gloucester becomes physically blind and it is not until then that he realizes his mistake. The physically impairment brought about the symbolism for me. The blind eyes are metaphors for how he sees life.

  2. Gloucester was blind when he had his eyes to those who truly cared about him. Only when he loses his eyes does he finally see the truth.
