What is the chivalric code? What is the Christian code? How was Lancelot loyal to the chivalric code, but not the Christian code and how does that lead to his demise?
Chivalry was the code of conduct in knighthood. There are a lot of aspects to it. Christian code is the code of conduct in the Church and in religion. Lancelot was loyal to the chivalric code by sticking to the court. He is not loyal to the Christian code because he has an affair with the one he loves. Within six weeks of betraying the Christian code Lancelot became very ill and died.
The chivalric code was the moral code practiced by knights. It stated all knights should protect others who can not protect themselves. The christian code was is like the golden rule "do to others as you would love to have them do unto you." He was loyal to chivalric code as he was a very brave and fearsome knight. He had an affair with the Queen which is not in the code of conduct with the christian code.
Sir Lancelot was one of the strongest knights in the land. As a Knight he held to the chivalric code by protecting the King and the people that supported the King. The Christian code held different goals and did not abide with Lancelots affair with the Queen, Lancelot's pride or killing all of the people for honor. Lancelot is warned by a kinsman that he should not visit the Queen on that night, that a trap had been set, but he could not believe that anyone would act against him. Chivalry also held that the strong would survive, so Lancelot had no fears and a lot of pride. His pride would be his downfall and not until he became a hermit did he realize how his actions caused many deaths.
Lancelot was loyal to the Chilvalric Code in the sense that he fought and protected people that supported the King. Lancelot did not follow the Christian Code because he had an affair with the Queen.
The code of chilvary was that they were to be loyal to their king, defend the weak, and by kind to others (manners). The Christian code was to live by the ten commandments and to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When they started to lead away from the Christian code, he started to lose not only his honor but also his life.
Wouldn't the Christian code and Chivalric code be very much intertwined? I think that Lancelot betrayed both. The code of chivalry goes beyond just protecting others, but also showing respect. Respect is not betraying the relations that you have with your friends and comrades.
