Beowulf #1

Who is Scyld? Where does he come from? Where does he go? What does he do? Why does the poem begin here, rather than with Hrothgar and Grendel?

  1. Scyld is the King of the Danes. The poem starts with Scyld to show the lineage of Hrothgar and Beowulf and that they were not always tribes that would have helped one another in battle. The first scene is Scyld funeral and that he is put to sea in a boat with many of his worldly posessions. Possessions were very important to show what type of a life a man lead and how honored he was by his family, friends and even enemies.

  2. Scyld is the first king in the royal lineage and also a good friend to Beowulf. He came from Denmark, and goes to Norway to help in battle but dies. So I think that he is talking about first in the poem because he is the first one to die in battle loyally for his people.

  3. He is the king that started the lines of the Danes. he and Beowulf have the same thing in common, fighting for a just cause and dieing to protect their people. The story also has the stresses on family connection, I think they started off with him to show the family linage of beowulf, that he comes from a strong and brave line.

  4. A legendary king of the Danes. When he dies, his body is placed in a longboat and is surrounded by treasures. The funeral is very ceremoniously grand. His body is then sent to sea. The poem begins here, because it is important to show the linage of characters.
