Beowulf #6

Where does the dragon come from? Why does he attack the Geats? Is the dragon a greater or lesser threat than Grendel? Why does Beowulf go to fight him?

  1. The dragon lives underground and comes out and attacks the Geat countryside at night because he has realized a poor slave tries to steal a golden cup from his treasure. I believe the dragon is a greater threat because it attacked randomly and Grendel only attacked the warriors inside Heorot at night. Beowulf goes to fight the dragon to protect and free his people from living in fear of it.

  2. Beowulf attacks the dragon because the dragon attacks the Geats. He came from a cave near the moors and he attacks the Geats because of a slave who took the golden cup. The dragon is greater than Grendel. The dragon wounds Beowulf and Beowulf slays the dragon.

  3. The dragon has been guarding a treasure in the caves in the kingdom. A condemned man steals a piece of the treasure and greatly angers the dragon. The dragon attacks the country of the Geats that is ruled by Beowulf and I believe that the dragon is a greater threat because it attacks more randomly and is angry at all people with no regard for anyone. The Grendel was upset at only one place because of the load music and merryment.
I believe that Beowulf was a great warrior and did not want to let his people down as they looked up to him for wisdom and safety.

  4. Anyone want to talk about the treasure the dragon is guarding. What shape is it in when they finally "rescue" it? Why is that significant? Where did it come from to start with?

  5. The dragon came from a cave deep underground, which is almost symbolic because in the old days caves were seen as a gate to the underworld. The dragon is a greater threat than Grendel because he is strong and just plain evil. He attacks Geats because a man had taken a gold cup from his treasure. This is a symbol of greed, which was the evil the dragon posessed. Beowulf goes to destroy the dragon to protect the people of his land and to show maintain his heroic title. The treasure was in poor shape once it was recovered showing that the gold on earth dosen't last forever, only the honor which you optain is eternal.

  6. The dragon comes from underground. He comes because a man steals a golden cup from the Geats treasure. The "stealing" rials up the dragon and is seen as unlawful and greedy. Beowulf tried to fight the dragon as well but his old age was getting the best of him and it was a rough fight. I also believe the dragon came and went as a sign from Grendel and his mother. Beowulf showed honor and bravery by wanting to battle the dragon.
