The King orders the Knight to be put to death by decapitation for the rape. Arthur's Queen and other ladies of the court intercede on the Knight's behalf and King Arthur puts the Queen in charge of the Knights fate. She sends the Knight on a quest to discover the answer to one question. Within one year, he must report back to the court with the answer to "what do women want the most". If he can accomplish this task and he is correct, his life will be spared.
