Wife of Bath #9

What does the hag teach the young knight about nobility in her lecture?  What makes a person "Noble" or "Gentle" according to her?

  1. The Hag teaches the Knight that nobility is not generic. Nobility is not a trait that people simply inherit. As an example, she speaks of boys who had noble fathers but were evil and did wrong. To the Hag, the most noble thing of all is being poor, yet still wanting nothing more.

    1. I think you mean "genetic" not "Generic," Gift. But, yes, you are correct. This is a very SHOCKING idea to the audiences of the middle ages.

  2. That it does not just come about for everyone. It is something you have to earn for yourself in life. She thinks that being in poverty and still being "happy" in life or content, is a strong definition of nobility.

  3. She explains to the knight that the true noble people are those who are poor yet ask for nothing more int their lives. There were many nobles all over the country that were not truly noble due to their poor personalities.
